Fiji is a postcard-perfect island nation famous for its turquoise lagoons, palm-lined beaches, and warm “Bula” spirit. Scattered across the South Pacific northeast of New Zealand, Fiji blends dramatic volcanic peaks with coral reefs, luxury island resorts, and authentic village life. From snorkeling vibrant reefs to hiking jungle-covered highlands, there are endless things to do in Fiji for every kind of traveler.
Planning a trip to Fiji? Before you book your island escape, it helps to understand the geography, climate, and travel logistics that shape the experience. Here’s what you should know before stepping into the South Pacific sunshine.
Fiji is an independent island country in Melanesia, located about 2,000 km north of New Zealand and east of Australia. It consists of more than 300 islands, with Viti Levu and Vanua Levu being the two largest. Most visitors arrive via Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu, the gateway to resorts, outer islands, and the famous Mamanuca and Yasawa groups.
The most comfortable months to visit Fiji are during the dry season from May to October. Expect sunny days, lower humidity, and pleasant trade winds. The shoulder months, April and November, often bring attractive prices with generally good weather. The wet season from November to April is warmer and more humid, with occasional tropical downpours.
Fiji enjoys a tropical climate year-round. Daytime temperatures typically range between 26–31°C. The dry season offers clearer skies and calmer conditions, ideal for sailing and diving. The wet season sees heavier rainfall, especially in the interior and on the eastern sides of the larger islands.
International travelers typically arrive at Nadi International Airport (NAN) on Viti Levu. Direct flights connect Fiji with Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and parts of Asia. From Nadi, you can reach other islands by domestic flights, ferries, seaplanes, or boat transfers arranged by resorts. Many outer-island stays include scheduled transfers from the mainland.
