Tanna is an island in Tafea Province, the southernmost province of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies about 229 km south of Port Vila on Efate, and is the most populous and most visited island in the province.
May to October is the dry season, with lower humidity, clearer skies, and better road conditions for reaching Mount Yasur and exploring the island. November to April is warmer and wetter, with fewer visitors and lower prices, though cyclone risk applies December to March.
Tanna has a tropical climate year-round, between 20 and 30°C. The dry season brings reliable sunshine and trade winds. The wet season brings heavy tropical rain, particularly in the interior, and the roads to the volcano can become difficult. The volcano itself is worth visiting in any season.
Daily domestic flights connect Port Vila on Efate to Whitegrass Airport on Tanna (TAH), taking around 45 minutes. Arrange your accommodation transfer in advance as taxis are not readily available on the island. Allow extra time before any international connection as domestic delays in Vanuatu are common.
