Super Typhoon Bavi Threatens the Northern Marianas – Info for Travelers
Super Typhoon Bavi is bearing down on the Northern Mariana Islands with catastrophic force. A Typhoon Warning is...
The Mariana Islands are a volcanic island chain in the western Pacific, known for tropical beaches, dramatic cliffs, Chamorro culture, and important World War II history. From Guam to Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, the islands offer a mix of warm weather, scenic coastlines, local heritage, and a slower Pacific rhythm that appeals to travelers looking for both relaxation and substance.
What makes the Mariana Islands so interesting is the contrast between tropical coastlines, historic sites, and a culture that feels distinct within the Pacific. Whether you are planning a beach holiday, island hopping, or a history-focused trip, these essentials help you understand what to expect.
The Mariana Islands are located in the western Pacific Ocean and form a long island chain north of Papua New Guinea and east of the Philippines. Guam lies at the southern end, while islands like Saipan, Tinian, and Rota sit farther north. Together, they create one of Micronesia’s most recognizable island groups.
The best time to visit the Mariana Islands is usually from January to June, when conditions are generally drier, sunnier, and more comfortable for beach days and sightseeing. The wet season runs roughly from July to November, with higher humidity, heavier showers, and a greater chance of tropical storms.
The Mariana Islands have a warm tropical marine climate throughout the year, with fairly stable temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Daytime highs often stay between 28 and 31°C, while sea breezes help soften the heat. Rain can fall in any month, but late summer and autumn are usually the wettest.
Most travelers reach the Mariana Islands by flying into Guam or Saipan, the two main air gateways in the island chain. Guam has the strongest international connections, while Saipan also receives regional flights. From there, travel between islands is limited, so flight schedules should be checked well in advance.
