Ambae Volcano (Manaro Voui)
Ambae Volcano is Vanuatu’s dramatic active volcano, known for crater lakes, raw landscapes, and deep cultural meaning.
Penama Province is one of Vanuatu’s most culturally rich and geographically diverse regions, stretching across three distinct islands: Ambae, Pentecost, and Maewo. Known for its active volcanoes, cascading waterfalls, and the world-famous land diving ritual, Penama offers a raw, traditional side of the Pacific. In 2026, it will attract travelers seeking authenticity, adventure, and a deep cultural connection far from mainstream tourism.
What makes Penama unique? From volcanic landscapes and lush mountain interiors to ancient customs still practiced today, this province captures the spirit of traditional Melanesian island life.
Penama Province lies in northern Vanuatu, east of Espiritu Santo. Its name comes from the first syllables of its three main islands: Pentecost, Ambae (traditional name is Aoba or Na), and Maewo. The province is remote, mountainous, and surrounded by coral reefs.
The best time to visit Penama Province is from May to October, during the drier season. Rainfall is lower, humidity is more comfortable, and travel between islands is generally easier. The wet season from November to April brings heavier rains and a higher chance of cyclones.
Penama has a tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures between 24–30°C, 75–86°F. Rainfall is abundant, especially on Maewo, one of Vanuatu’s wettest islands. The dry season (May to October) is sunnier and slightly cooler, ideal for trekking and visiting tourist attractions.
Travelers reach Penama Province via domestic flights from Port Vila or Santo to airstrips on Ambae, Pentecost, or Maewo. Flight schedules vary and may change due to weather. Inter-island travel is by small boats, and road infrastructure is basic, especially in rural areas.
