The Society Islands are often seen as the heart of French Polynesia, bringing together some of the region’s most iconic scenery, culture, and travel experiences. This island group includes world-famous names like Bora Bora and Tahiti, along with quieter gems such as Huahine, Raiatea, and Taha’a.
Expect lush volcanic peaks, bright turquoise lagoons, rich Polynesian traditions, and a mix of adventure, relaxation, and island beauty that feels like the South Pacific at its best.
Known as the heart of French Polynesia, the Society Islands combine iconic lagoons, volcanic peaks, and centuries of Polynesian culture across a diverse group of islands both famous and undiscovered.
The Society Islands are a volcanic archipelago in French Polynesia, located in the central South Pacific about 4,400 km south of Hawaii. They’re split into two island groups: the Windward Islands, including Tahiti and Moorea, and the Leeward Islands, home to Bora Bora and Huahine.
The ideal time to visit the Society Islands is from May to October, when the weather is dry, sunny, and pleasant. Calm seas make it perfect for snorkeling and island hopping, while July brings vibrant cultural celebrations like Heiva i Tahiti.
The Society Islands enjoy a tropical climate year-round, with a dry season from May to October and a wet season from November to April. Expect sunny, breezy days in the dry months and warmer, more humid conditions with passing showers during the wet season.
The Society Islands are usually reached via Tahiti’s international airport, followed by a short domestic flight or ferry. Air Tahiti and Air Moana connect the islands by air, while ferries operate on select routes from Tahiti to nearby Society Islands and back.
