Vanuatu is the kind of Pacific escape that still feels wild in the best way, volcano nights on Tanna, blue holes and reef days on Santo, laid-back Port Vila afternoons, and real kastom culture woven into island life.
What makes Vanuatu so special is the mix of raw nature and living culture, an easygoing island capital, dramatic outer islands, and a tropical climate that changes with the trade winds. This quick guide covers the essentials, so you can plan smarter and land ready.
Vanuatu is a Y-shaped archipelago of more than 80 islands in Melanesia, in the South Pacific. It sits east of Australia, northeast of New Caledonia, and west of Fiji. Most visitors base on Efate (Port Vila), then add Santo or Tanna.
The most popular time to visit Vanuatu is the drier season, from May to October, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and calmer weather. July and August are busiest. For fewer crowds and great conditions, aim for April, May, September, or October.
Vanuatu has a warm tropical climate year-round, with average daytime temperatures often around 24 to 30°C. The drier months (May–Oct) bring trade winds and clearer days. The wetter season (Nov–Apr) is hotter and more humid, with heavier rain and cyclone risk.
Most trips start with a flight into Port Vila on Efate (VLI) or Espiritu Santo (SON). You will find the easiest routes via Australia, New Zealand, and nearby Pacific hubs. From there, island hops are done by domestic flights, small boats, and local ferries.
